Welcome to Maker Faire Austin Town Hall Wiki. password=maker!
First off this is NOT OFFICIALLY SPONSORED by Make or OREILLY publishing. This is just an act of love by Silona - a huge fan of Maker Faire.
I'll announce the next meeting here!
June 1st 6-9pm at la Madeleine on Lamar and 34th street. - Hope you can make it!
Well the meetup on Jan 27th went really well with over 35 people in attendance from various communities. I think we will work on making this a regular event to help promote the Maker community spirit here in Austin. Sherry loved and was greatful for all the feedback. I think what stood out the most to me was how much everyone loves this event and is already figuring out how to make it even better for next time. What a great bunch of DOers!

Some suggested topics:
- Interesting Foodie projects
- How to increase local sponsorship of large art projects in Austin
- I want the Austin Music scene to be better represented. How to do that?
- I'm doing some stuff with the Center for Texas Music History, and they might be willing to step up in some way. I'll ask.
- We really need to reach out to the chiptuners and remixers. There were some great acts last time, but far too short. When a set might consist of a single song, there's more that should be going on. Tree Wave couldn't make it last year, but maybe he can make an appearance this year. There's been a ton of interesting developments, and I'm working on one now - we'll see what comes of it.
- I want the Austin Film scene to be better represented. How to do that?
- I'm suggesting a session that will be all about independent documentation of projects and cover basic camera work, tips, editing and effects. It's not much, but it's a start.
- How about an independent screening room going all day with various films? Worked out great at BarCampIII, and would give people a place to chill and cool down between events. Could tweak it out, make it feel really old-school if you want to keep with the circus-gone-wrong theme of the Cali faire.
- Caravans to Maker Faire next year (bio busing project?)

- Various improvements for the Faire (e.g. make it easier to FIND STUFF)
- Keep the theramin projects to the corners of the building. Don't know why, but for some reason, it was killing the wireless signals to all the booths surrounding it.
- Speaking of wireless, need true dedicated ethernet for some projects. The group I was with had it up and working, but then the floor grinches came and unhooked it just because they didn't do it.
- Same electricians said that the power was kosher, even though it fried three booths later that night - might want to warn people to bring APCs, outlets and gaf tape (not Duct Tape).
- Have the robot group keep the noise down. Understand the mentality, understand the draw, but impossible to maintain sanity after 4000th airhorn blast and 'More Human than Human' roll.
- Make sure to remind folks to request chairs, tables, etc. - HUGE issue last year.
- Overall check-in process for booth-based individuals (such as in-booth swap out personnel) needs to be more seamless, had entire crews of folks waiting and booths vacant while I got paged to the front to confirm and help them check in, even though volunteer lists were given in advance as requested.
- Volunteer improvements (some notes below)
- More lead time for recruitment and to get the word out
- More local media involvement
- Coordinate and amp up the blog noise before the event
- Have volunteer signup near the entrance for public, maybe one at Maker check in and one at public entrance?
- education for various lead areas about how to best utilize volunteer help , and description of jobs
- water stations set up at various locations for volunteers
- volunteer button on first page of website, easy to find and easy to sign up
- Special requests
- Need building blueprints to get clearance for laser light show, who do I need to call?
